Meeting Minutes
17 July 2003
Members present: John Vraa, Helen Estenson, Eunice Evenson, Janet Gerla, Phil
Gerla (recording), Bernice Wahl, Signe Vraa, Todd Evenson, Darryl Paulsrud, Ervin
and Jane Vigness, Melvin and June Johnson, Jerry Wentzel.
Chairman Vraa called the meeting to order. Minutes of the 19 June were read and approved.
Treasurer’s Report: Balances….. A-savings $10.58, D-savings $1863.59, checking 1273.97, CD $15,000. Income…. $10 membership, $5 donation, $4.34 and $0.03 D and A savings, $29 donation split w/SCAN, $914.50 dinner income. Expenses…. $240 insurance, for the dinner - $160 in starting cash, $7.99 for Todd, $390.35 for Signe. Profit from the dinner….$356.16
Motion and second to approve Treasurer’s report as presented was passed unanimously.
Old Business:
1. Report given on the Small Town Saturday. (a) At least 20 baskets were
auctioned for about $400. Raffle was less successful due to last minute
uncertainties.
(b) Many donations are acknowledged: Freddies Lefse – 9 dozen lefse, $6.50 per dozen, for $58.50, RBJs Restaurant – 2 pies for $17, Happy Harrys – Grey Goose for $56.99, Widmans - $10 gift certificate, Pamida – 2 baskets for $15.
(c) About 120 people were served dinner, similar to 2002
(d) Jane is considering a change in the weekend so it will not conflict with the Polk Co. Fair
(e) John suggested making Keith and Julie Dale honorary members as a way to thank them for all their work, time, and donations
(f) SHSHS sent $25 to Jason and Becky Ekstein to reimburse their dinner cost and as a small token of thanks for their prairie presentation
(g) Signe wrote and sent a letter to the Polk Co. Museum thanking them for help with wood cutting
2. Report on the Community Assistant Program interviews and our interest in hiring Jennifer Tall. No work yet from CAP administrators. Ideas for the assistant included working with family histories, cabin plaque, log building architecture, oral histories (new and old), examination of other old buildings in Hillsboro (Hoverson) and in Gentilly.
3. Excellent coverage of Small Town Saturday in Grand Forks and Crookston newspapers. John extolled the virtues of our Historical Society
New Business:
1. Discussed what should be done with the CD as it will mature soon. Motion was
approved unanimously to renew it.
2. Farmstead sign needs to be fixed. John suggested cutting the sign out and screwing it onto the old sign
3. Discussed farmstead progress made this past summer
4. Three bus loads of children (about 100) came for a visit last month.
