Course Philosophy and Objectives --- This course focuses on using computer software that may prove useful in the geoscience and environmental professions. Rather than learn a particular interface "inside and out", we will use the software to solve a variety of geological and environmental problems that you may encounter in other courses and in geoscience professions. Most of the work this semester will center on using Excel (spreadsheet applications), SURFER (variograms, gridding, and contouring), ArcGIS (geographical information systems and analysis), and, time permitting, web page construction and management. Lecturing will be kept to a minimum and maximum time provided for supervised work on in-class assignments.
Prerequisites --- A basic knowledge of Windows operating systems and the typical Windows interface is needed. Some geological knowledge can be helpful, but not essential. Algebra and some fundamental statistics will be used at times. Please ask for an explanation or more help if you have questions! You also need a CAEN system account, which can be applied for at the School of Engineering and Mines Office in Upson Hall.
Time and Place --- Leonard 108A, Tuesdays and Thursdays 1:00 to 2:15 pm (part-semester, ends in March)
Instructor --- Phil Gerla, Associate Professor of Geology and Geological Engineering, 213 Leonard

Office Hours --- 2:15 - 3:15 T & Th and 12:00 - 1:00 M & W (or please make an appointment for other days and times)
Grading --- Grades will be based on students' performance on in-lab exercises and ability to use the software. Grades for (a) in-laboratory assignments (always due one week after the day presented in class) and (b) tests (occasional quizzes, along with a possible mid-semester and final test) will be approximately equally weighted. An "A" grade will need to have 90% or greater possible points, "B" 80% or better, and "C" 70% or better. Late assignments will not receive credit.
